Senior Allie Hawkins defends the basket from her Torrey Pines opponent backed by the rest of her team. The Titans started off their season with eight wins and two losses.

On Dec. 5, top scorer, junior Katelyn Johnson, rushes down the court dribbling the ball beside her, barreling past her Cathedral opponents to score yet another point for her team, ending their home opener game with a winning score of 66 to 40.

The Varsity Girls Basketball team is off to a great start, including a well-earned win on Dec. 12, against Torrey Pines. The team is already paving their path to a successful season. As of Dec. 19 they have a record of eight wins and only two losses.

The Titans fought hard against the Falcons to keep their points up with a final score of 55-47. Senior Bree Leroux was proud of how well the team played and the effort they put in, especially since they were missing two of their top scoring players, seniors Ari Mason and Mackenzie Parsons due to absences and injuries.

“With two starters missing, we really came together and pulled through to get another amazing win,” Leroux said.

In their Dec. 9 home game against Mt. Carmel, Poway destroyed the Sun Devils, scoring 81 points on the team with only 29 points scored against them.

One thing that differentiates the PHS Girls Varsity Basketball team from other high school teams is their stamina and outstanding cooperation according to junior Riley Walsh. Without these traits, the team would not be where they are today.

“We’re a very close-knit group with great communication skills which has benefitted us immensely,” Walsh said. The girls use each other to grow their own personal skills and to function as a team on the court.

This year the team is made of mostly repeat players, and they are on track to match the record they held last year of 24 wins and 5 losses.

The major difference between this year and last year’s season is the competition. This year the Titans are playing much more skilled teams in the Avocado league.

¨I could see us winning some really hard games, which would put us up higher in the rankings,¨ Coach  Carissa Jones-Fletcher said.

Jones hopes the team will place above eighth in the county, which would put them in the Open Division CIF play-offs.
