Watching over as hopeful cheerleaders come to show off their skills and judging jumps, chants, tumbling, and confidence, new Assistant Head Cheer coach Arden Sels is ready for the season ahead of her. Sels comes from an All-Star cheer background of over 10 years. She founded the All-Star program and San Diego Stunt.
Sels grew up in Germany and has been cheering since she was little. She was originally a flyer but could not overcome her fear of being tossed in the air, so she switched to the base position. She comes from a long background of All-Star cheerleading, going up to level six.
With her vast experience, she now coaches a junior-level six and seven-year-old All-Star team. She started coaching after she was injured and unable to continue to compete.
“I got injured as an active athlete and wasn’t able to participate for a season, but wanted to stay involved in cheer, so I started coaching a junior-aged team,” Sels said.
This year, she aims to focus the team on increasing the difficulty level in stunting skills, intricate dances, and cheers. The motivated athletes who want to be a part of the Poway cheer community is another huge factor for her.
Her style of coaching is to make cheer? fun and exciting.
“Her main role will be to oversee the varsity team, and she will be in charge of skills, stunt progression, and sideline choreography.” Head Coach Selena Giorgio said.
This cheer season, the coach hopes it will be the best one yet,” I am extremely happy to have both Coach Nicole and Coach Arden this year supporting the team. I believe each member of our staff brings a unique approach, and it will help elevate the team quickly. We are very excited for this season!” Giorgio said.
