As the school year wraps up, so do spring sports.
Most teams have finished, with softball still competing, and some track, tennis, and golf athletes still progressing through individual CIF play-offs.
Baseball
With a 14-game winning streak until mid-May, Varsity Baseball stood out this spring. They went into CIF play-offs ranked second in the San Diego section Division II rankings and first in the Avocado League, going 14-1-1 in league and 19-9 overall.
The team had huge wins against Sage Creek High School (14-0) on Mar 23, and Ramona High School (24-0) on Apr 18. On May 13, they played Westview in the final Avocado League match-up, winning, 3-1.
On May 19, they played Grossmont High School, losing 5-2, and ending their CIF run.
Softball
The girls are continuing their season and advancing through the CIF Division I bracket. They went 13-15 overall and 4-6 in league in the regular season, ending fifth in the Avocado League.
“We’re hoping to make a strong run all the way to the finals,” senior Karissa Knapp said before they played their first round CIF game on May 20 against Steel Canyon.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The Boys’ Lacrosse team had an overall 9-10 record for their season and 3-4 in league, with their CIF Division II playoff game against La Jolla Country Day. In that game, they had an exciting finish where the boys were down 9-3 in the last five minutes and scored four goals extremely quickly. Despite this rally, they ended in a 9-7 loss.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Since moving to Division I, Avocado League, Varsity Girls Lacrosse has had a challenging season. With a 0-6 record in the league, they placed sixth. They placed fourteenth in the San Diego Division I rankings.
Despite the challenges on the field, the team tried to make changes at practice. They progressed through CIF Division I, reaching the quarterfinals against Scripps Ranch High School, but they were unable to get through the Falcons’ defense, losing 15-3.
Swim
Both the Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ teams won the Palomar League Championship against Del Norte.
In CIF Division I, the boys finished strong, placing tenth overall and medaling in the 200 freestyle relay and placing ninth in the 400 relay.
Individual medalists were juniors Brighton Lathrop in the 50 freestyle, fourth place, and 100 butterfly, seventh place, and Max Kellerman, finishing in eighth place in the 100 freestyle.
“I was really proud about how I performed at CIFs because it’s an atmosphere where you can swim against the best and race your hardest in the best conditions,” Lathrop said.
In CIF Division I, the Girls’ Varsity Swim team placed tenth overall in the 200 medley, eleventh overall in the 200 free relay, and fifteenth in the 400 relay. Sophomore Amaya Patankar medaled in the 100 breaststroke, receiving sixth place.
“It was a good learning experience . . . I had a lot of fun swimming with my teammates,” Patankar said.
Dive
It was a rough season for Dive, as only two divers led the charge. Despite a small team, they both placed in the top ten at the Division I championships. Junior Ava Hansuvada earned seventh place with 12 points and a final season score of 171.16, and sophomore Davis Downs earned eighth overall with 11 points and 149.25 for the season.
“CIF was fun and helped me work through fears, becoming more confident in my skills. I learned to be less afraid of trying new things, getting out of my comfort zone,” Hansuvada said.
Boys’ Golf
The boys had a very competitive season after moving up in league; they have a record of 13-9-1, finishing them off second in the Palomar league. Six athletes progressed to the CIF Division II bracket.
“Our league games were successful, with beating most of our opponents in league games,” senior Matteo Scaffa said.
Boys’ Tennis
The boys’ team ended their season well, competing in the CIF San Diego Section Division I Palomar League. They also finished the season as league champions for the first time in 18 years.
On May 20, they competed in their second playoff game at Torrey Pines golf course.
“We’ve had a great season and had major improvement from last year and are continuing in the right direction,” senior Trevor Cox said.
Track and Field
While the team did not have a great season as a whole, lots of individual athletes did. To go to prelims, 22 boys qualified, and 20 girls qualified.
At the May 16 CIF Division I championships prelims at Del Norte High School, 28 athletes earned spots in the May 23 finals at Mt Carmel High School.
Top athletes included sophomore Keith Buswell, placing second in the 800, senior Cooper Castleberry, placing second in the 1600 meter, junior Ava Delaney, placing fourth in the 800 meter, and junior Alessandra Santavicca, placing second in the 3200 meter.
The boys’ 4×800 team took first, the 4×400 earned 5th, and the 4×100 came in 8th. The girls’4×800 took 2nd, their 4×400 got 8th, and the 4×100 qualified with 13th place.
“I got my best personal record in the 100 and 200 and ran in the fastest heat in Palomar history, and my 4×1 became ninth in Poway history,” junior Adrian Ismaili said.
Varsity Field had six athletes compete on May 16 at the CIF Division I championship prelims at Del Norte High School. No athletes qualified for finals, but top athletes were senior Anna Gergurich in high jump, earning 14th place, and junior Zachary Bartholomeusz in Pole Vault, earning 16th place.
Boys’ Volleyball
The Boys’ Varsity Volleyball team had a record of 34-12, going 5-3 in the Avocado League, ending up third overall in league. They had an impressive winning streak of 14 games. Their streak ended May 10 against Francis Parker.
“It was a double elimination, so we played Francis Parker, and we lost. Then we played Carlsbad, and we won, so we played Francis Parker again and lost,” senior Luke Jorgensen said.
Gymnastics
This was the first time in recent years Gymnastics had full JV and Varsity teams. With a bigger team, they had more skills and earned higher scores, as the majority of those athletes came in with a cheerleading background.
“It was our first year having full JV and Varsity teams, allowing growth, not only within the team but also in our scores and skills,” senior Maddie Burk-Nothwang said.
Sophomores Mya Quilleterio, Karina Navarro, and Lyla Kuchcik are all headed to individual CIFs today, May 22, at West Hills High School.
Roller Hockey
The team had a successful season, going 7-6 overall.
In the CIF open division, they had a back-and-forth game against Cathedral Catholic, losing 5-4 in overtime.
