Senior distance runner Cooper Castleberry continues to cement his legacy as one of the top athletes at Poway High, breaking records and setting the standard for excellence in distance running.
Competing in cross country, he has shifted back to track, where Castleberry races the 1600-meter, 800-meter, and 3200-meter events.
Most recently, Castleberry broke his own school record in the mile, running an impressive 4:12.26, improving his previous best of 4:12.84. Before Castleberry took over the record, the school mark stood at 4:14.91, set in 2017. “It’s kind of weird breaking your own record. Every time I get a personal best, it becomes the new school record too,” Castleberry said.
During his latest record-breaking performance, Castleberry used a pacer to help him through the first half mile before finishing the race on his own. His ability to stay consistent and execute his race strategy has been key to his wins. Looking ahead, Castleberry has set many goals for his last year here. He hopes to lower his mile time to around 4:05 to further solidify his memory here at Poway High School. “Even though he has developed into a very talented athlete, he has never changed as a person. He has always started modestly and never bragged about his accomplishments,” senior Tanner Jackson said.
His hard work, athleticism, and determination earned him an opportunity at the next level. Castleberry has committed to continuing both his academic and athletic career at the United States Naval Academy, where he will also take on the responsibilities of military training and service.“He has grown into a person who can see himself stepping up to lead. It’s an honor that he has chosen to serve our country and follow my footsteps by attending the Naval Academy,” Track and Field Head Coach Ronnie Harris said.
Castleberry has set the San Diego standard for high school distance running. He is also highly regarded at the state level. As he prepares for the transition to college, Castleberry remains focused on improving his times and finishing his high school career strong.
