Titans could see their breath in the air, the Titans are on the edge of their seats. It was the end of the fourth quarter, and Varsity football got set to stop a punt. Mater Dei kicked and junior Luke Jorgensen blocked it, sealing Poway’s 62-24 win CIF San Diego Section Division 2 championship game on Nov. 29 at Southwestern College.
“My favorite moment of the game would have to be when towards the end of the game, we blocked a punt and after we blocked it I knew we had won the game,” Athletic Director Damien Gonzalez said.
This game was different from any other game from poway. There were many fouls, penalties and flags thrown. At one point in the game Poway got seven penalties for 85 yards. Some star players of the game included senior Colin McCann, junior Luke Jorgensen, and senior Jake Tsay. All contributed to touchdowns, running yards, and blocking a punt from Mater Dei.
Varsity Football went into CIF with a 0- 6 in the Avocado league. Head Coach Brandon Harris thought it was really important for his players to buy into what they were saying and to focus more on the bigger picture, leading into the CIF season.
In the first CIF playoffs game against Point Loma Nov. 15., they won with a giant lead of 28 to 7. The following week, they demolished University City High School 63 to 27, sending them to the CIF Championship for the first time since their win in 2011.
Junior Delonte Hillery played in the CIF championship game and although it was an amazing experience there were some obstacles to jump through. “The most challenging part of the CIF championship game was the first half. I felt it was the hardest because I was overthinking and overwhelmed by the experience,”Hillery said.
This was Head Coach Brandon Harris’s first season coaching at Poway . He said his biggest accomplishment this season was the commitment to the path to success. .
“It’s always the journey first, The CIF championship was something that was celebrated, and we were happy for it but the journey is where it’s at, the process that we went through and getting them to buy into what we were doing, our summer camp week, and just finding the path to cohesion as a unit and the ending result was the CIF championship and now slingshotting us into the state championship around the corner,” Harris said.
Poway played Rio Hondo Prep High School for the State Semi final Championship Bowl in Division 3-A on Dec. 7. Although pushing their hardest they lost , 14 to 28.
