Tate McRae expands her musical horizon

In 2017, 14-year-old Tate McRae released her first YouTube video of her singing her original song “One Day.”
She could not have anticipated that this song would start the next six years of her music career, including two hit songs on TikTok.
Her next milestone was the release of her new album Think Later on Dec. 8.
McRae being on Dance Moms as a child most likely influenced her dance skills that she shows off in her music videos now.
Her music video for “Exes” features her dancing dresses as a boxer in a ring.
McRae’s new album Think Later, has challenged new styles outside of her normal music genre.
She started with more slow, sad songs at the beginning of her career, and now her songs have a more pop-rock feel.
From the first song on her album, “Cut My Hair” I appreciated McRae more than I had before.
Her voice, lyrics, and vocals had me wanting to finish her album in one sitting. Specifically, her song “Grave” had the lyrics conveying the slight feeling of bitterness and sorrow for someone she never had. Not only are her lyrics yearning, “I could never make you want me like I wanted to be wanted.” but her voice matches along.
The songs I had already known before the release of the new album were her hits “Greedy,” and “Exes” which blew up on TikTok and became a repeat listen in people’s playlists.
Another song I was familiar with was “Run For The Hills” which has me wanting more of that syncopated rhythm.
Every song has a catchy beat and chorus that makes me love each song in its own way.
Besides her more mainstream songs, McRae had her fair share of slow, sentimental tracks like “Grave” where the tempo is slower than her usual pop, but is just as catchy.
“Calgary” had me feeling nostalgic and reminiscent of all of the relationships I’ve screwed up. McRae seems to have a way of making her listeners feel exactly how she intends. “Guilty Conscience” reminded me of my 2014 summer spent listening to Tove Lo and what summer felt like then.
Overall, underrated artist Tate McRae seems like she’s building her name for the better.
After tuning in, I am intending on going to her tour.
As a young artist, only on her second album, she has the rest of her life to show others how much potential she has in her.
From YouTube star to pop star sensation, McRae will continue to grow as an artist that some may miss if they don’t keep their eyes out.
