Everyone living in San Diego during late winter and early spring knows that we really do not get really cold months at all, with record highs hitting 90 degrees in early March. These unseasonably high temperatures usually mean an “extreme UV” ranging from 7-11, and for some people it means an early start to the tanning season.
As a natural tanner, I love using tanning products and finding new methods to get a tan early on in the year, so the tan builds on itself. So set out a towel and grab your friends or books, because this is my ultimate tanning routine for the perfect summer glow.
Before tanning, I recommend staying hydrated and keeping a full water bottle and snacks nearby to ensure comfort and safety under the harsh sun. It’s also important to take as many breaks as needed, to cool off and give the skin a break.
An essential part of getting the best tan includes sunscreen, despite the myths that it blocks out the sun, preventing a tan. Sunscreen is designed to sit at the top of the skin to allow UV rays to hit it, while sunblock completely prevents a tan. As someone who doesn’t burn easily, I always use Hawaiian Tropic’s “Island Tanning” lotion, because it has an SPF of 4-30, allowing for the biggest difference. If you do burn easily but still want a tan, I recommend Sun Bum’s SPF Spray, which also smells amazing.
After applying sunscreen, the key component to the darkest tan is tanning lotion or gel, because it’s designed to accelerate melanin production, to produce a deeper, more even tan. My personal favorite is Carroten tanning gel, because it’s relatively inexpensive since the bottle lasts for a long time, and it also smells like summer, unlike other nasty-smelling lotions.
Now you’re ready to lay out and soak in the sun, making sure that you spend 15 minutes tanning your front, and the same on the back. After every 30 minutes, jumping in the pool or spraying yourself down with water helps with cooling off and attracts more sun due to the droplets. If you don’t have a pool, taking a break in the shade works too. Go for another session after reapplying as many times as you’d like, or until you feel tanned.
To ensure the tan lasts longer and fades evenly, I love using Maui Babe’s “After Browning” lotion after rinsing off. It works like aloe to seal in your perfect tan, and also works to heal sunburns if you have any.
For those who don’t naturally tan easily or just don’t have the time to go outside for a week, self-tanner is the next-best option for overnight results. Loving Tan’s self-tanner, found at Ulta Beauty, is a high-end option that works wonders and lasts longer than cheaper options. Bondi Sands’ self-tanner is a more affordable option offered at most grocery stores, and it too, gives an even glow.
Whether it’s with a group of friends at the beach or going solo in your own backyard, tanning is the easiest way to fill time with fun and to get outdoors.
