Junior Sierra Marshall jumps off the diving board with perfect technique and a smooth landing. With training from new dive coach Makenna Sammons, Poway’s dive team is on its way to a great season.
Sammons was the Most Valuable Diver in 2018 and 2019 at Northern Arizona University as well as a CIF Champion, and an AAU Diving All-American. She holds records in Six and Eleven Dives. She has been diving for 10 years and is happy learning many things on the “other side” as a coach. Her plan for Poway’s team is to improve her athletes’ technique as well as enjoy practice and having fun.
Sammons believes they will make it far this season with hard work and dedication. She settled on Poway as the place to bring her coaching talents because of the great athletic culture.
“I chose to coach at Poway High School over other schools that reached out because of their great athletic programs. Poway has a great reputation in all their sports and academics, and I’m proud to be a Titan,” Sammons said.
On the other side of the pool, with guidance from head coach Michelle Ford, Varsity Swim has similarly demonstrated much promise. They had a big win against Ranch Buena Vista High School on March 8th when boys won 129 to 35 and girls 126 to 29. Their meet against Westview High on March 19th was canceled halfway through the meet.
Junior swimmer Kiele Smith credits the team’s strength to the team’s close-knit atmosphere.
“Our team is really close because we are such a large team with 40 people, boys and girls,” Junior Kiele Smith said. “We get lots of opportunities to bond through relay and other things like very long meets, but overall our team relationship is really good.”
Coach Ford feels the future is bright for both programs.“Our future looks great! Since this is an individual sport we are going above and beyond to be supportive of each other’s personal best races and times,” Coach Ford said
