Standing beside a half-filled bookshelf in her newly assigned Student Support Services room, Ayurelia Bea arranges stacks of calming activity books while greeting passing students with an open-door smile Bea, formerly a substitute teacher and campus supervisor here, was preparing her new room for Student Support Services. She said she hopes to make the space welcoming, even as she works through the challenge of organizing it herself. Even while setting up, she is ready to help any student who walks in. She expects to be fully available in January.
Bea used to coach children’s and teens’ gymnastics from 2018 to 2019. Since 202,0 she has been a campus supervisor from that time until her recent position switch in October. “She’s fit for the position because she knows our students, she knows our campus, and our community. She definitely has that personality that kids are willing to talk to her and be honest. But, she is also going to be honest with them. Which is important for somebody in that position,” Assistant Principal Cindy Lewis said.
In her new position, Bea aims to meet students’ social and emotional needs, offer mediation, provide support for those struggling with vaping, and be a safe adult to talk to. She also hopes to continue interacting with students across campus, building deeper connections to make a greater impact.“I’m really looking forward to seeing what this turns into, creating a space for kids, and hearing what they’d like to see in this new position. I’m open to suggestions,” Bea said.
Bea emphasized that her support is for everyone. “I want to be here for everybody, not just one specific group of kids. I think that all kids, no matter what stage of their lives they are in, need help at some point. We all need help at some point. So, I am looking forward to that,” Bea said.
Students can visit Bea in room K‑25 in the counseling building, either drop-in or by appointment.
