Mya McGowan leads Softball to win over RB

It was neck and neck between Poway and Rancho Bernardo on March 24 at the Poway Sportsplex. Mya McGowan was at the mound, ready to throw the next pitch.

“I feel that I just have to finish for the team and do my part on keeping it a low scoring game,” McGowan said, reflecting on her feelings throughout the match.

The Titans secured a 3-2 win against RB. Another important win that the Titans had was their 7-4 win against Carlsbad, to whom they had only lost by one run two days before.

McGowan is only a sophomore, and she is already leading the softball team to many victories.

“Mya’s pitching is a huge part of our team’s success. Mya is an absolute stud. She’s an amazing pitcher, hitter, and fielder overall,” senior Hailey Burns, the Titans’ center fielder, said.

McGowan holds the title for the seventh best high school softball pitcher for the sophomore class in the state of California.

The Titans are performing incredibly well, holding a record of 17 wins and 3 losses. Not only do they play well on the field, their bond with each other outside of games is something that most athletes wish for in a team.

“We have continued to get closer through many fun activities…our bond has really affected how we play as a whole – we support each other and pick each other up at our lowest,” Burns said.

They gained four new players this year, all freshmen, which has contributed to their solid performance this season.

“Every player has individually developed and the addition of four good freshmen all set us up for success,” McGowan said.

The Titans were ranked first overall in San Diego as of April 24, and placed first in the Palomar League with a 4-1 record. They are in good shape to compete in CIF, hopefully reaching the championship game in back-to-back seasons. What the team is looking forward to most, however, is their senior night and last regular-season game on May 12, against Mt. Carmel.
