Ready, Set, Block!

Oliveira is the goalie for Poway’s field hockey and lacrosse girls’ teams.

The spring breeze roars out in the stadium as the green turf full of pebbles surrounds her. With lacrosse sticks laid out, and major protection gear on, Myra Oliveira gets ready for the field. The experienced varsity goalie is out to put on a show. Oliveira, who has played for 11 years, was introduced to the sport by her brother and cousins, and it was love at first sight. She has played varsity for all four years of high school.

“I first started playing at a clinic, and from then I kept going,” Oliveira said.

As a captain, one of her main goals for this season was to form a close bond with her team and get them to become one on the field.

“Myra is an amazing goalie that does so much more than just save shots and make great clears. She is very knowledgeable and saves us by blocking even the hardest shots. Her spirits and drive inspire me to be better,” sophomore teammate Jazzy Nguyen said.

“As a goalie, Myra is the backbone to our defensive unit that leads by example and has had some jaw-dropping saves this season. Myra constantly comes to practice and games with a positive attitude, ready to lead the team,” head coach Ashley Inman said. It is clear that the perseverance and strength Myra brings with her every day is an example of a great leader.

Not only does she play lacrosse, but Oliveira also plays for the field hockey team as a goalie too. With four wins to one loss as of March 22nd, her season is off to a great start.

Outside of her love of sports, Oliveira is in peer counseling and a community group for her church. Myra always tries to help her community out the best she can by learning and seeking.

She also spends time hanging out with friends, reading, going out to get coffee, and thrifting.

Surrounded by her positive peers,  there is always a chance she is having a good time.

After high school, Oliveira will attend UC Santa Cruz majoring in environmental science.
