Running into records

After a delay in the season due to COVID-19 guidelines, Poway Track & Field athletes were excited to get back into competition, with members of both boys and girls teams breaking personal records.

Track star Maxwell Jefferson competed in the Arcadia State Invitational, considered by track athletes and coaches as the most competitive meet in the country. Participating in the 300-meter hurdles, he took first place with 39.27 seconds.

Track runners Tessa Buswell, Alysa Bean, Sophia Chittle and Mackenzie Rogers broke the school’s medley relay race, a total of 4,000 meters, in 12 minutes, 13 seconds, slightly less than 30 seconds than the previous school record.

The hurdlers have been waiting for this all season and now they are putting up excellent numbers, but it didn’t happen overnight. Senior Konor Chinn emphasized the work the team put in during practice.

“We are always working. Our coach Hannah keeps us moving and makes sure everyone has the proper mechanics going. It’s honestly the key thing behind our good races,” Chinn said.

Mackenzie Rogers, a competitor in distance running, set a personal record at five minutes, three seconds in the 1600-meter race.

“It was really fulfilling to run such big PRs this season after working so hard individually throughout all of quarantine. I have big goals for next year that I am excited to try to achieve!” Rogers said.
