A student notices an empty spot in their schedule, a position that they had hoped for is unavailable due to the 2 trimesters a year maximum rule to be a Teacher Assistant. Teacher’s assistants (TAs) are responsible for helping out a teacher of their choosing.TAs are available every period, but some are more occupied than others, making certain teachers’ availability less. They help with teaching, checking on the class, and really anything that the teacher could need assistance with.
Students are only allowed to be a TA for two trimesters per school year. According to the school, there are many reasons for this, for example, it gives other students a chance to be a TA, allows students not to TA for the same teacher the whole year, and allows other students to assist that teacher’s class. I believe that this is a fair rule. Being a Teacher’s assistant is an elective that does not fall under the a-g college preparation credits. It is not a class to learn more about academics, but rather to help a teacher out. Only allowing two trimesters of being a TA gives students a chance to take other elective classes, like journalism, photography, or digital media.
Students may argue that this rule is unfair because only the TA elective has a two-trimester restriction, and that the teacher could be depending on them. Although this is true, a TA elective is not an academic class. Also, teachers should not depend on their TAs, rather just use them as a tool to help their class learn. Limiting students to only two trimesters also prevents people from taking it as an “easy class” and abusing it just so they have less academic work. This helps all students meet their graduation requirements by having enough coursework completed. This rule should be kept in order to encourage students to be in academic classes and give other students a chance to work with the teacher they want.
