Senior Angelo Posada and sophomore Mario Carini became wrestling state champions in their weight classes on March 1. Three others, junior Ava Fodera, and Billy Townson. And Edwin Siera placed 2nd in California.
As a team, the Boys took 2nd and the girls placed 6th overall with a total of 12 placers
Senior Angelo Posada completed his high school career with a bang, winning in CIF and the Masters, as well as placing first in the state.
“I had no doubts in my abilities to win the state. There was not a moment when I didn’t believe in myself and the work I put in in the last four years here,” he said.
Other state placers included Daniel Moylan taking third, Ava Ebrahimi taking fifth, Arseni Kikiniou taking fifth place, Noemi Cordero taking seventh, Mathew Orbeta placing seventh, Bailey Holman in seventh, and finally Julius Villamil in eighth place.
Both the Boys and Girls teams won the Masters Tournament on Feb. 22, where they qualified 14 boys and seven girls to state. To make it to the Masters, a wrestler needs to place in the top eight at CIF. The top four wrestlers in each weight class go to state.
This was the first time a California team was able to take first in both sections for girls’ and boys’ wrestling.
At CIF on Feb. 15, the boys took first and the girls placed second. Poway set a new record of 43 pins, exceeding their 40 last year.
This record is particularly impressive because most of the team are underclassmen. At CIF, junior Ava Fodera has a bright smile on her face, talking about her second-place finish at state because of the intense work put in to get to this point. She explained that she had gone 0-2 last year at state.
“This placement made me see the work put in the last two years, and it felt really good to see how much I had improved.
My coaches prepared me for the state by looking at the girls I was going to wrestle and figuring out how to go against their main moves they pull on other opponents.”
The team is extremely hyped up about the scores and records they have made in the past couple of weeks alone,” junior Ava Ebrahimi said.
“CIF was good. We had two girls, one for the girls’ team, and then the boys took first. The girls won masters as well as the boys, taking first place, making Poway the only team in all of California to have both teams win in the same section,” Ebrahimi added.
