They rustle on the mats to slam their opponents during the meets and tournaments. Poway High’s wrestling program has a huge reputation, not only in the Poway community but in California and the nation.
Last year they took their fifth state title.
With 12 wrestlers placing and three individual champions last year, the team earned a recod-breaking 290.5 points.
Some of the senior returners include Angleo Posado, who placed first at state in the 175 lb weight class and Alyssa Jones who placed second in the 125 lb class.
This year Poway has done well in their tournaments, including winning Battle for the Belt at Temecula High School Jan. 17, where they had eight finalists and five champions, including Daniel Moylan, Angelo Posada, Mario Carini, Arseni Kikiniou,
and Matthew Orbeta.
The new season with a whole bunch of new athletes joining the program gives opportunities for these athletes to learn how to live up to the reputation of high school wrestling.
“ The season is going great. We are ranked 8th in the country currently. . . We have one more tournament and a big dual meet against Doc Buchanan Canyon, who’s ranked number one in the state coming up Feb.1,” coach John Meyers said.
The wrestlers did a fantastic job in their dual against Rancho Bernardo on senior night Jan. 9, demolishing the Broncos 76-0.
The season included some interesting and exciting tournaments to look back at, including them winning the Rancho Bernardo dual; however, they were disappointed at the Doc Buchanan Invitational tournament at the begining of January where they placed fourth overall.
Poway’s record has rocketed past expectations.
“We all raise each other up every day to be the best version of ourselves, ” sophomore Zachary Posada said.
Big tournaments coming up are Stephan Neal Super Bowl Brawl on Feb. 8, the San Diego CIF Championship on Feb 15, San Diego Masters Feb. 21, and the State Championships are Feb 27 through March 1.
“I’m looking foward winning a state team title,” sophomore Mathew Orbeta said.
