Stepping onto the rugby field, senior Roxanne Walsh is filled with mixed emotions; adrenaline, determination, and passion to win.
This is Roxie Walsh´s fourth year playing rugby and her exciting first year as captain after being co-captain last season.
Walsh really likes being a leader to the team,
“I enjoy the responsibility that comes with the privilege of being captain, as well as helping new players navigate the sport, reinforcing team values such as good sportsmanship and especially team bonding because this team is my family. It inspires everyone to push themselves to the limits and we continue to bond every day,” Walsh said.
Communication and teamwork are the key to success and Captain Walsh is the utter representation of those values.
She aspires to further her rugby career in college because she loves the sport, “I love rugby because it’s one of the only high-contact sports that girls can get access to and play rough. It’s really fun and I’m very passionate about it. It’s also a very welcoming community, almost family-like and you get to meet all kinds of amazing people,” Walsh said.
Captain Walsh says coach Kim Sileo has, “She has made a huge impact in my life, I’m so grateful for her. She welcomed me to the team with open arms four years ago. Both her and the sport have taught me the meaning of courage, determination, and consistency and she has really shaped me into who I am today”.
Sileo has been coaching for six years now. She believes it’s a powerful sport that builds character and strengthens players in all sorts of ways,
“My favorite thing about coaching is watching the players grow as rugby players and into young women. It’s a very empowering sport, both physically and mentally,” Sileo said. It’s a sport that you know right away whether it is something that you want to be involved in, Sileo said.
This is Poways 10th year having a girls’ rugby team as of 2015, their record this year stands at 0-4.
“We are making our way and enjoying growing together,” Walsh said.
Titans can support the varsity girls on January 25th at Westview for an exciting evening.
