Junior Luke Jorgensen receives the ball and rushes down the field for the Division 2 title against Master Dei Catholic. Jorgensen started playing football his freshman year because the game has always been an important part of his life. Jorgensen’s family activities have focused on football, either playing or watching the games on TV. “Football was always on at my house, we’d always talk football, it has always been a part of my life,” Jorgensen said.
Jorgensen’s dad inspired him to play right before he started high school. His dad also played football when he was in high school and college. As a running back, Jorgensen scored 19 touchdowns this season and has run 1201 yards due to his impeccable skill. His favorite thing about being on the team is getting the opportunity to score. Jorgensen has been described as an all-around player and teammate. “He’s always about his team first… over himself. He’s what we call our in our program OKG, our kind of guy. He’s great on campus, he’s great around other people that don’t play football, he’s picking the kid up that plays on the other team during the game,” Head Coach Brandon Harris said.
Jorgensen does not know if he will continue his football journey after high school, there is potential that he will, but overall he’s going wherever life takes him. A highlight of his season was winning the CIF Division II championship game. “The game was really satisfying because Poway hasn’t won a CIF championship in such a long time, so it was cool to be the first in a long time… especially with the new head coach, The win came after a league record.” It’s nice for all of us to get a win after an unfortunate league,” Jorgensen said.
Jorgensen credits his teammates for helping him succeed this season. “Luke has tremendous energy in the way he plays, and I think that energy is infectious to his teammates because they get excited about how hard he works,” Athletic Director Damian Gonzalez said. Jorgenson plans to continue playing football next year for Poway and is still undecided about playing in college.
