After dropping their game against Carlsbad, Boys Water Polo came in red hot with a record of 15 -7 and 1-1 in the league going into their game against Rancho Bernardo on Oct. 16.
The team has been solid all season, winning five of their games with over 15 points scored, the highest being a 17-3 blowout on Sept. 4 against San Pasqual at home.
They prepare for games by focusing completely on their craft, usually silent for the practice to heighten their focus. The team puts in optimal effort at each practice to ensure maximum skill level.
This method has proven effective all season, and the team hopes this work ethic will help them keep on winning.
“We have a fun and good group of guys this year,” sophomore Caleb Griesi said.
This year their strengths have been with the ball in their possession, shooting, and scoring effectively
throughout the season, including a win against Vista 13-9 after trailing in the game and coming out with a win on Oct. 2.
“My favorite moment this year was when we beat Vista after having a rough game and losing to them last year,” Luke Gerardi said.
Losing last year did not affect the game this year, and they pushed it from their mind even. The work they put in during practice contributes to their offensive success.
On their own time, players will toss around a ball, and swim to stay comfortable and ready for their games.
Going into games, they try to maintain a positive attitude even when trailing, so they can stay focused and come back to win if necessary.
When down in the last few minutes of the game they never give up and keep working resulting in a hard-fought win against Crean Lutheran 10-9 on Aug. 30.
Water polo is a tight knit community and players know each other well through school games and club. Players sometimes face former teammates in matches.
“My Favorite part so far was playing against Classical Academy and seeing all the people who I play with in club,” sophomore Graham Gustafson said.
Winning the game 14-8 was the cherry on top.
They hope to keep up their recent winning streak and take the win against Long Beach Poly on Oct 19.
