In the new film, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Tim Burton produced a thrilling and comedic sequel.
Going into the movie I had low expectations because sequels never compare to the originals, but I was shocked at how well done the movie is. I am glad they did not try to remake the original movie but instead, added on to the plot.
I wouldn’t say Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a horror movie but more of a scary movie. The scariness comes from the creepy characters rather than jump scares and suspense. Beetlejuice pale, and covered in cuts seems “dead”, and his outfit was ripped and torn to shreds.
The movie seems directed towards a younger audience by making real time references along with song choices and they did an excellent job with casting. For instance, Jenna Ortega who played Astrid Deetz is a perfect choice since she is an up and coming actor. She is known by all age groups, which plays out nicely to the multiple generations who would enjoy the film.
I also liked the fact that Burton kept Wionna Ryder as Lydia Deetz because it kept the original story going. If they had casted someone else then I feel that the older generation wouldn’t enjoy it as much because it would change the vibe of the movie completely, recreating the original instead of adding onto its plot.
New characters like Lydia’s daughter, Astrid and her love interest, Jermey made the new plot interesting. One thing I would have done differently is the ending. It was good, but it seemed to eliminate the possibility of a third movie. I am unsure if Burton would even think about doing a trilogy, but in a few years, I fear it would be very hard, but I would enjoy seeing how it would play out.
Overall, Burton did an incredible job for this sequel, and I thoroughly enjoyed the film.
