Retiring Staff reflect on their time at Poway

Sharon Struck

Why did you start working at PHS?

I wanted to work at Poway High primarily because my husband was a 1977 graduate, and my son also attended Poway High, so I had a lot of reasons to want to work here.

What are your plans after this year?
We bought some land in Southern Missouri, and we are building a home on Table Rock lake, which will help us be closer to our grandchildren.

What has been your favorite part about working at PHS?
The students! Being able to help students is something I really love. I also love that students have been able to tell me that I’ve helped them throughout their time at Poway.

Michael Wagenveld

Why did you start working at PHS?

I started teaching at Poway High back in 1997. I transferred here from Rancho Bernardo High School where I taught one year. Previous to that, I
had taught five years down in Sweetwater District in the Chula Vista area. I’ve taught French, Spanish, and P.E here at Poway throughout my career.

What are your plans after this year?

I plan to enjoy my time off by riding my mountain bike, and traveling. My first trip will be to the Canadian Rockies, spend a couple of weeks there, and I also want to continue building my business.

What has been your favorite part about working at PHS?

I enjoy teaching language to 1st year students. I love being able to introduce students to my native tongue, which is Spanish. I love being able to teach not only conjugations but the culture and the people, and all things Latin America and Spanish.
