Going for the goal, junior Max Kellerman treads through the water to get the Varsity boys’ water polo team to the lead. Kellerman, who has played water polo for seven years and has been on varsity since his freshman year, is now a captain.
Before he started water polo, he played soccer.
“I started playing after ending club soccer, and my dad got me into the sport because he played in high school too,” Kellerman said.
Kellerman plays as a wing utility player, making him an essential goal scorer in the pool.
Fellow captain Hudson Scogin is also an offensive player, and said he could not imagine the team without Kellerman.
“Max is the beating heart of our offense with strong shooting and a love for swimming, and is an even better teammate,” Scogin said.
Kellerman has high hopes for the current season’s direction.
“We’re doing very well, and hopefully we make it to open, being top eight in San Diego,” Kellerman said.
Not only does Kellerman see potential for greatness, but so does Athletic Director Damian Gonzalez. As he watched from the sidelines, Kellerman caught his eye while the team crushed the competition against San Dieguito Academy on Sept. 16, 19 to 7.
“His athletic ability in the pool was unreal. He was unstoppable in that game and carries himself as such a leader, and I was very impressed with his abilities,” Gonzalez said.
While being a unit on the team, Kellerman prioritizes his academics most of all.
“I took an off roll to prioritize sleep and focus one hundred percent on school most of the time,” Kellerman said.
With many memories throughout his high school career, Kellerman’s favorite has come from this season.
“Placing third at the Rancho Bernardo Aquafest tournament was fun,” Kellerman said.
He plans on playing at the Del Norte Water Polo club during the off-season and has been talking to some schools, hoping to attend a Division I school for college.
