The library’s new furniture, consisting of “Farmhouse chic” table-bench combinations and mid-century modern armchairs for reading, draw students in, offering a more comfortable space to learn and relax.
“We wanted it to have more of a comfortable, college feel,” PHS librarian Lisa Gore said.
The furniture cost approximately $30,000, which was covered by a grant from the Neighborhood Reinvestment Program through the County of San Diego.

Almost all of the grant was spent, split between the library and the classrooms.
The library updated the furniture in its classrooms with improved desks and chairs. Library media technician Boheme Morris is hoping to see students continue to utilize the library for their studies and enjoy the new furniture.
“We’re already really happy with how many people come into the library and use our space, but we’re hoping to see continued usage of the library as a space where students feel comfortable and want to hang out, study, and eat their lunch,” Morris said.
The old furniture was donated to teachers’ classrooms and spaces in need of new furnishings.
Students feel like the new furniture creates a better vibe and is more welcoming. However, some wish it could be more accommodating to technology.
Senior Parham Rostami enjoys the new furniture but wishes for charging ports.
“If there were chargers over there, I could work and use the charger,” Rostami said.
The PHS library plans to continue its remodeling with softer lighting and the possible addition of student art and decor.
