There will be some big changes for the campus security team next year, with a familiar face returning and another leaving.
David DeLeon, commonly known as “Mr. D,” who has worked at Poway High School for two years previously, is expected to return to campus next school year, making it his third year after stepping away to support family.
According to DeLeon, his return is rooted in something deeper than just location.
It reflects the deep connection he feels with the school and its people.
“I miss the kids here quite a bit. I miss being a part of the community here and wanted to return to the family,” DeLeon said.
Many staff and students are excited about the news. During his previous time here, he was known for his friendly presence and for holding students accountable fairly and respectfully.
Principal Richard Nash wanted the people he hires to contribute to the community and uplift the environment.
Nash said he saw something special in DeLeon,
“He’s approachable, he’s a kind, caring individual, but he will hold you accountable because that’s his job,” Nash said.
Security guard Tori Ornela, also known as “Ms. Tori,” has been a supportive presence on campus for the past two years.
During her time here, she not only served as a campus supervisor but also coached the boys’ varsity soccer team with Coach Gene Morris.
While she is not leaving the area, she is venturing off to experience new opportunities.
She plans to study physical therapy at a new school next year.
