I sit in class, writing my argument essay for AP English Language. I struggle, even though this is not the first essay I would have submitted to my teacher for feedback. I submit my second writing at the end of class, only to receive my first essay a few days later, marked up with ideas on how to improve my writing. It would’ve been helpful to receive feedback before having to do another assignment, but I understand that it takes a lot of time to grade essays, and we need to continuously practice for the upcoming AP test.
Assigning piles and piles of work onto students without giving them feedback on the work previously submitted has no benefit to students; it just stresses students out while their quality of work may not be improving. One way to make sure students receive quick feedback on their work is by submitting it to an Artificial Intelligence (AI) grading system.
Some AI platforms are designed to assist students with their writing, not do it for them. One of the platforms that I am familiar with is Class Companion, a website that can either help teachers track AI in students’ essays or provide them feedback so they can make revisions. For one of the assignments in my AP English Language class, students were required to submit their work to Class Companion. The summary of its analysis was very helpful, and the score it predicted for me to receive was realistic. My teacher reviewed the feedback and agreed that it was what she would have suggested as well.
Although many teachers are skeptical of AI or regard it as cheating, taking advantage of helpful AI tools in the classroom can lead to quick feedback and a greater chance of improvement in students’ writing skills.
