Since November of 2024, when Gannon Burks left, Poway has been short a permanent assistant principal.
New Assistant Principal Cindy Lewis joined the staff on March 10, and she is in charge of supervision for students and will now oversee programs like AVID, and the CAASPP exams.
Before moving here she taught 8th grade history at Roosevelt Middle School.
Her aspirations for her new position is to help staff and students feel safe and comfortable and to learn.
“I like to help kids kind of see the connections between themselves and other people throughout time,” Lewis said.
Although there is a substantial amount of work that comes along with being an Assistant Principal, Lewis claims she is drawn to her position for her love of working with people and helping students in an exciting time period get to where they aspire to be.
Lewis speaks on the excitement seniors contront when shifting from highschool life into college and real life experiences.
Starting her new position she is excited to help future adults find their dream schools and careers while being a supportive figure in their lives.
Principal Richard Nash helped hire her.
“She has the right disposition to support you guys and hear where you are, and she knows your age,” Nash said.
Nash speaks of her high levels of education and her community experience where she has lots of experience advising teenagers.
Lewis claims to be in her dream position, someday hoping to be a principal.
“The few weeks that she has been here, she’s already connected with a lot of students, obviously she’s fair, she’s firm and she is very smart and very knowledgeable,” Administrative Assistant Fernanda Urmeneta said.
Some of her other duties will include planning fire and disaster drills and working with ELL, Math, PE/ Health, Visual and Performing Arts and World Language Departments.
Outside of work Lewis enjoys hiking out in nature, cooking delicious and filling meals, or reading a book, claiming her favorite hiking spot Lake Hodges.
She finds comfort in cooking since she likes to choose what she eat on a daily basis and what to make for her family.
She hosts Thanksgiving every year, planning in advance to coordinate the meals she wants for her family.
Lewis loves to travel to other countries to learn about the culture, specifically México and Spain for their unique culture.
