Little kids around the world are ecstatic when Disney remakes some of their favorite movies like The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, and most recently Snow White. Bringing such wonderful worlds
to life creates a nostalgic experience for the viewers. Unfortunately Snow White didn’t do as well as Disney anticipated.
Amid controversy, the live-action movie Snow White was released into theaters on March 21. As it is one of the lowest-rated movies on IMDb at 1.5, I had poor expectations. Before watching the
movie, I expected that the rating was from people upset by the fact that Rachel Zegler plays Snow White.
Although extremely talented, Zegler unfortunately dug a hole for herself with this movie. Zegler made it a point during early press for the movie that she was scared by Snow White as a child,
she watched the original only once when she was young, and she just bashed the original animated movie. This caused the public to view Zegler as ungrateful, and many automatically assumed
her version of the movie would be terrible.
Although I tried my best to go into watching this movie with no biases from what the media is saying, it honestly felt like the longest and most boring hour and a half of my life.
After watching Snow White, I feel that the 1.5 rating is accurate. The movie felt like a complete stretch from the original. Zegler and her co-star Gal Gadot, who plays the Evil Queen, have made it clear in interviews that Snow White would not be relying on a man, and she did not need to be saved by true love’s kiss.
The movie, in my opinion, showed the complete opposite. The movie ends just how the original does, with everyone thinking Snow White is dead, but then the man kisses her and she’s awoken.
The movie felt like the directors were trying to mix Cinderella and Tangled.
The love interest, Jonathan played by Andrew Burnap, a thief fighting for the King, feels like an off-brand Flynn Ryder. The love story between Johnathan and Snow White is rushed, and I
never felt any romantic connection between the two. Growing up I really loved Snow White and personally I didn’t think it needed to be re-made. It’s a sweet idea for all of the little kids
now to see their own kind of version of it, but unfortunately Disney botched it.
During certain scenes it looked like an animated set and Snow White was just photo shopped in. It felt like the movie was made years ago when movie editing was struggling. Another thing
that I wish was different was the Seven Dwarfs. The directors had the perfect opportunity for inclusivity in this movie. It makes it even worse that they used AI but then they cast a real person with dwarfism as another character.
I genuinely could not say one thing I liked about this movie. Some movies don’t need to be remade, and Disney missed with this one.
The entire movie felt as if it began as Snow White but then became its own movie with slight undertones of Snow White. Considering that I enjoyed other Disney live-action remakes, I am disappointed.
