Imagine living in a world where you can customize your partner. You choose their intelligence, eye color, voice, hair color, the possibilities would be endless. Well, that becomes a reality in Companion, where can people view it now?
It begins with, Iris played by Sophie Thatcher, joining her boyfriend Josh played by Jack Quaid and his friends on a weekend getaway to a cabin in the middle of nowhere. Iris is a bit hesitant to go, considering his friends aren’t exactly fond of her. Iris is feeling awkward and out of place.
The beginning of the movie confused me because they did not explain that Iris was a robot until about 30 minutes into the movie. I was never able to predict any storyline that played out in this movie, which I guess could be appealing to some viewers, but I wish they put things together better.
Something happens which leads Iris to hurt one of Josh’s friends, boyfriend and Iris is conflicted because she didn’t mean to hurt him. She was acting in self-defense as he was trying to do something bad to her.
The whole movie runs because she doesn’t want to be a bad robot, and she is mad that Josh made her do bad things. She spends the majority of the trying to get it through to Josh that she doesn’t want to be evil and she never wanted to kill anyone. Iris whole goal throughout the movie was escaping the real evil, Josh and Kat.
The movie had an eerie mood to it because the Iris seemed so real. The robots are programmed to be absolutely head over heels in love and obsessed with their human partners, but it all felt a little creepy to me. The genre of this movie is Horror, but it went a bit beyond that for me. I left my seat after watching the movie feeling uneasy and a bit grossed out.
Sometimes movies don’t need to be made, and ideas are meant to be kept as ideas. This is one of those cases. I think it was an odd plot for a movie, and it felt like a bunch of different robot movies mixed into one.
However, I did like the fact that Iris was against being an evil robot and instead wanted to fight against what she knew was wrong. Regardless, the cons outweigh the pros for me when it comes to this movie. If you like movies like M3gan and Subservience, then I would recommend this movie to you. As for me, I will not be rewatching.
