Custodians play a vital role in maintaining a welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors. Responsibilities extend beyond routine cleaning tasks; they are integral to the school’s daily operations and overall success. Custodians at Poway High School are tasked with a variety of duties to ensure the school’s facilities are in optimal condition, even including the assurance of minimal vandalism on campus. Six custodians are part of the team, including Claudia Incidie, “The whole school is divided into routes and everyone has the campus for the school year,” said Incidie
It is a never-ending task. “Throughout the week, it’s messy at the end of the school day, and then it gets cleaned, only to be messier the next day,” Sharon Farmer said. With the daily cleaning, custodians must struggle with the multiple vandalism activities students partake in within the school, such as the bathroom, classroom desks, and rotten food left in the lockers due to students.
Wiping the walls with inappropriate phrases, “It’s frustrating a student’s vandalism because of how much time it takes and removes from doing and cleaning other rooms,” Edwin De la Cruz said. As students disrespect the classrooms, they also disrespect the jobs of custodian, although with all of the disrespect custodians face, there are appreciations students illustrate around campus. All the thank you and appreciation custodians receive vocally add a joy to custodians aside from the ruins of vandalism.
