In recent months with president trump’s presidency taking place in February, the effects of U.S. immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) has had a negative impact on our community, causing a rise in anxiety and fear among Poway families and students.
Members of the Poway community and school have taken steps to ensure that students and their families are safe and supported.
Poway High’s staff is doing their best to make sure they connect with the affected students and support them.
“Many students have felt so stressed recently. It has affected their attendance at school due to concerns. While this time can be difficult for everyone, I’ve personally had one on one conversations with parents to help reduce the fear and answer questions and concerns,” Principal Richard Nash said.
One of the key things to keep in mind is that ICE agents are not working with schools in our community. The Poway Unified School Districts has made it clear that they are not agents of the federal government.
Moving forward, Poway High has been communicating with families and students that have concerns to ensure every student gets an education without fear and stress.
“It’s our duty to protect and support everyone. For Families seeking more support, resources are available through organizations like the Department of Justice and the San Diego office of Education, which can offer legal guidance,” counselor Blanca Arreguin said.
While some Poway students are themselves American citizens, they may be worried for family members who are not.
“My parents have completely isolated themselves because they fear what might happen, and now me and my siblings are taking on bigger responsibilities at home and outside of home,” one Poway High student who did not want to be named, said.
Although the school has created a safe environment, the emotional and mental toll students and families are facing is real.
Poway recently held a protest on the 5th of February to help support our community and spread kindness. They had snacks food vendors and people with signs or flags supporting their communities and bringing everyone together.
