“How are we gonna make $1,500 by 6:00? Not to mention I got an interview at 4:00,” says Dreux to her best-friend-turned-troublemaker Alyssa. This marks the start of their desperate, yet hilarious plan that is the heart of One of Them Days.
Not long ago I first heard about the film, and I remember being ecstatic. I have never been a big fan of comedy due to its rather unnatural nature, but with Keke Palmer leading the cast, I was eager to watch.
Palmer is a versatile actress with over 17 years of experience under her belt. She has been part of movies like Nope and Akeelah and the Bee. Palmer has also played ‘Ella’ in Cinderella on broadway. She has the kind of charm that suits all performing arts genres, and I was certain that she would nail the role.
SZA’s involvement in this film surprised many, including me. As much as I respect SZA’s excellence in music, I was initially worried. Acting is an entirely different craft, and not every musician successfully transitions to the big screen. But after watching, all I can say is that One of Them Days is a one-of-a-kind, perfect rated-R comedy.
The film follows Dreux (Palmer), a hard-working woman juggling multiple jobs while chasing a long-awaited promotion and her best friend, Alyssa (SZA), an artist whose specialty is painting. Their problem started when Alyssa’s boyfriend took their rent money to invest in a sketchy business.
What makes this movie shine is the chemistry between Palmer and SZA. Their dynamic feels natural, the humor is sharp, and the pacing is tight.
One of Them Days is not only hilarious, but it is also educational. The film teaches viewers financial literacy concepts, and it highlights the struggles of the working class and the dangers of poor money management.
Other standout elements of this movie include its cinematography and soundtrack. Both the vibrant city scenes and the upbeat music perfectly complement the film’s energy.
If there’s a downside, it’s only that some jokes may not land for everyone. But even if comedy isn’t your favorite genre, One of Them Days is still worth watching. It’s entertaining, fresh, and offers an insightful message.
After all, we all have one of those days, and One of Them Days captures that experience perfectly. Whether you’re a comedy fan or a skeptic like me, it is hard not to enjoy this film.
