Poway High will offer students an opportunity to get a head start on their college credits through dual enrollment with Palomar College. Starting trimester three this year students can take college-level courses on the Poway high campus.. The credits will count and transfer to CSU and UC schools.
“Our goal is to ease the transition into higher education, so students don’t have to worry about their future while they’re still focused on high school,” Principal Richard Nash said.
For the upcoming trimester, students are encouraged to contact their counselors to sign up if interested. Courses will be offered based on student interest. If enough students sign up, Poway will offer these courses next trimester. Students can look on the Palmer website for courses that they might be interested in such as Ethics studies which is required to take in college.
“One helpful point to remember about this upcoming program is that instead of students traveling to Palomar College, a college professor will come to Poway High to teach these classes, giving students a chance to experience college-level instruction without leaving their high school campus,” dual enrollment supervisor Jennifer Finn said.
“One of the biggest advantages for me was seeing how different the courses and teachers were at Palomar which made me realize I wasn’t ready yet to take college courses. Going to Palomor helped teach me good time management between classes and good organization that ended up helping me when I returned to Poway for my senior year,” past student from Palomar college Camryn Perkes said.
