Physical education is required in public schools and with that there are rules set in place to keep kids safe while getting their daily exercise. Before P.E. rules were reinforced in a more strict way, students would leave class early and not attend second attendance. Students wouldn’t dress out appropriately for physical activity. But now since the new school year has started rules have been made clear to students and if not followed they will not receive points for that day.
This year teachers have started more strictly reinforcing second attendance. Students must change out of their gym clothes and get ready for their next period in the locker room then come to stand on numbers for second attendance. Students will be marked absent for second attendance if they don’t show up,
“Second attendance holds students accountable, it’s like a job if you leave work early without telling anyone you get fired,” Jones says. Instead of getting fired, students will get no participation points for the day. Coach Carissa Jones-Fletcher a P.E. teacher and the head Coach of the Poways Girls varsity Basketball team said.
Teachers also enforce a dress code for P.E. Students should be dressing appropriately for working out. Tops with spaghetti straps, bando tops, tube tops, and crop tops do not qualify.
Poway provides workout clothes including a drift shirt with a Poway logo, and some basic green gym shorts. Studentscan bring their own workout clothes as long as they comply with the dress code. Shoes must also be closed-toe tennis shoes that are appropriate for working out.
Move attribution to the end of the quote. P.E. teacher Dinese Gutierrez who also coaches JV Tennis said, “ Boys and girls must wear T-shirts instead of little tank tops or bands because it’s not appropriate for class,”
Coaches emphasize wearing athletic clothes for student safety and because they want students to be comfortable while working out.
Freshman Audrey Jennings takes freshman P.E. and has experienced the new rules firsthand. “I hate second attendance. It’suseless because we have to hurry in the locker rooms, ” Jennings states.
