During third period, three times a week, students hear the same phrase on the announcements, “Now teachers please turn your attention to Titan TV.” But there’s no use in the announcement if teachers in many classes respond by saying, “You guys can watch that on your own time at home.” This school year school leaders removed homeroom completely from the schedule, replacing those minutes with 10 extra minutes in 3rd period announcements and watching the school’s newscast. Teachers should be using this time for its intended purpose instead of taking advantage of it.
Broadcasting classes work hard to provide Titans with a newscast to watch three times a week, but their effort goes unseen when teachers choose to not play the videos for their classes.
Titan TV uses only around six to nine minutes of the provided ten-minute period, giving teachers an extra few minutes to start class.
The schedule from last year underwent changes, including removing our homeroom and putting those minutes into our third periods. On the days that Titan TV is not broadcasted, teachers can utilize those extra minutes for their lessons, overall extending their cumulative class time for the week.
It is disappointing for the students in Broadcast Journalism who put effort into their segments every week for it to be disregarded by teachers and for the students who look forward to it every week.
I understand that teachers are going to make the most out of their class time but the 10 extra minutes in 3rd period is dedicated to providing students with entertainment and information about school.
Without viewing Titan TV, students are missing out on gaining valuable knowledge on things such as class competitions, upcoming events, upcoming athletics, and so on. This could mean the difference in game attendance or how to know when homecoming ticket sales ended.
Teachers need to be able to fit time into their schedules to allow their class to watch Titan TV without distractions and it is not the responsibility of the students to watch on their own time because the school schedule has provided us with time to do so in school.
