For most high school students, college is the next step in their academic career, but finding a college that fits can be extremely difficult. According to Poway High counselor, Jerilyn Padua Reyes, assessing the distance, college life, and their ideals for
college, students can find the best fit.
There are many important factors to consider. “I would want to consider where it’s located, what you enjoy doing, and if that college will allow you to do that. College is about your goals,” Padua Reyes said. Location doesn’t consist only of the city, but the weather, culture, employment opportunities, and distance from home.
If a student is really set on a school, but the weather is miserable or they can’t find a job, they may need to look elsewhere
When applying, visiting colleges is important because the campus atmosphere could make or break the compatibility of a school with a student.
“I visited the University of Delaware in the summer of 2023. I totally fell in love with the campus and the atmosphere of the town,” recent graduate Lily Teran said.
Visiting colleges does not exclude visiting city it is in as well. Getting a feel for the town is just as important as a feel for the college. “I wouldn’t have wanted to go to school in an environment that looks and feels like a business park,” Teran said.
To find out more about a school, applicants can contact admission offices who can answer questions that you may have, and can provide additional information.
Though it may be difficult to think about, cost is a key factor surrounding college admissions. This does not mean giving up on your dreams, but finding a way to make college affordable is major.
Another important factor is the distance from home. This can make or break the fit of a college.
Poway alumni Chloe Rodgers, who chose to attend California Baptist University realized that, “independence didn’t have to mean living in a different state.”
Another part of finding a college fit is the culture. The culture of a college represents what the school stands for, as well as the characteristics of the student body. Clubs, Greek life, and sports opportunities can help students find the best fit.
Doubt can hold students back from opportunities.“Remember, a lot of schools want you as much as you want them,” Rodgers said.
College is personal, everyone is on their own path and journey.
“You are going to college for you, not for anyone else,” Rodgers said.
