At a dinner with her children, sister and father, math teacher Karen Day . . .
Three generations of her family have been teaching at and attending Poway High since the 1970s.
Day’s parents, her sister, herself, and now her kids go to Poway.
Day went to Poway as a student while her parents, wrestling coach Wayne Branstetter and Her sister, Amy Rewa, taught there.
Even though she came from a family of teachers, she never felt a burden to become one. She always had a passion for math and wanted to go into statistics. She attended UC Davis in Northern California which she loved. Yet, she felt a calling home to Poway, “Nothing compares to home,” Day said.
This year is her first year teaching at Poway and her kids also attend Poway High School, “I love having my mom here at school because it’s super fun to hang out in her classroom and always have her there to help me,” Sophomore Thomas Day said.
I also asked him his opinion on becoming a teacher. “I’ve thought about going into the career of teaching but I’m still unsure.”
Day is not the only current teacher at Poway, her sister Amy Rewa teaches Spanish here. “I’ve always known I wanted to become a teacher since I was like five-years-old. And I love working at the same school as my sister, but I wish I could see her more often.”
I also asked her if she felt pressure to become a teacher. “I’ve never felt pressure from my family to become one I just always knew.”
