Decorating the halls for black history month, Black Student Union (BSU) plans to recognize great African American artists during finals week.
BSU is a club for all cultures and races to recognize the importance of African-American history. This is a place to talk about African-American figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Muhammad Ali, and Rosa Parks, who all made a huge impact on the world.
“This is a great space to hang out with other students of color,” sophomore Amelia Dockery said. They also reach out to other schools to participate in their activities, such as watching movies and talking about African-American figures.
The club allows members to get to know more about their culture.
Club members also make sure they know they have people who care about them.
“I think it’s important to have a community for the black kids at our school to come and feel like they’re not alone in a predominantly white institution,” BSU President senior Ari Mason said.
BSU clubs are located all over the U.S., all focused on helping and educating our youth. This club is a welcoming environment, encouraging participation in their activities. This club has been around nationally for many years, dating back to 1966, when it was founded at San Francisco State University and continues to thrive and inspire many across the country.
“We’re able to bring in students we don’t normally see during the day, and come from all different types of backgrounds and were able to come together and just discuss things,” advisor Carissa Jones Fletcher said.
