Varisty football has lots of talent to showcase on the field. Some of the team’s strengths are the young players who are very capable with tons of potential and constant improvement from all the players.
A highlight of the season for most was the close win in overtime against Ramona on Sept. 8. The teams rallied, but Poway prevailed and beat Ramona 35-34 in overtime.
“My favorite part of the season has probably been just fighting out there on the field with the people I care about so much,” senior Jaden Tagulinao said.
One of their biggest challenges is getting in their own way, considering they have not been living up to their potential and making easily fixable mistakes. “We just need to play together,” senior Kiko Ekiko said.
The coaches come up with a game plan, offense, and defense based on what they have seen. This strategy has been effective in some games, such as against Rancho Bernardo, where they won 14-6.
They have continued to improve throughout the season. “The team played hard all season and has continued growth throughout the year,” Head Coach Kyle Williams said.
Poway’s highest-scoring game of the season came on Sept. 1 when they obliterated Valley Center 57-6.
In order to maximize wins, the team tries to limit the number of turnovers on offense and improve the tackling on defense. One of their collective goals is to win a playoff game. Playoffs start Nov. 3, with match-ups is to be determined.
Tonight, Oct. 27 they face Mission Hills away.
