Coach Selena Giorgio and Cory Froling look around in the stands at the Friday night lights, hearing the cheers of students and chants of their cheerleaders. With two brand new coaches, athletes wondered what their season would look like.
“I was excited when I was told there was going to be new coaches this season at Poway High because I look forward to seeing my team grow with new coaches and experiences,” sophomore Kathryn Inzunza said.
“Though the old coaches did get removed, we are back and better with coaches who are able to push our cheerleaders to do their very best,” Athletic Director Damian Gonzalez said.
Giorgio is a former Titan cheerleader who graduated in 2013. ” PHS is pretty much the same as when I attended the school 10 years ago. It is great to see that a lot of the same teachers and coaches are still at Poway,” she said.
Froling has been an Allstar Cheerleader for 22 years and has much knowledge of the sport and how to best help his athletes with skills. The new coaches have worked hard this year to get their athletes ready for games, pep rallies, and community events.
According to Giorgio, the cheerleaders are “eager to work, and doing the best they can…… these athletes are hilarious and brighten our day every time we get to see them.”
She says her co-coaching relationship is, “incredible. We balance each other out perfectly. Each person’s strengths complement the other’s weaknesses and it has been running very smoothly.”
“We are excited to continue to build out the PHS cheer program for years to come,” Giorgio said.
Giorgio and Froling not only coach junior varsity and varsity cheer, they also coach a competition team that represents Poway. They will compete in a competitive routine against hundreds of other high schools. They held open tryouts on Sept. 27.
Titan Cheerleaders speak very highly of their coaches. ”Their incredible and amazing coaches, and I love them so much. They’ve helped us so much with our routines,” sophomore Bailey Huey said. Giorgio and Froling have much love for this program and are excited to continue it for years to come.
