The school year has begun, and it is no surprise that the anxiety from assignments, group projects, and tests has followed along with it. For these stressed students, our campus has many different outlets.
Many Titans have been unable to cope with the change in day-to-day workloads, and many are also dealing with home situations they may not feel comfortable sharing with peers. For these stressed students, our campus has many different outlets.
For starters, counselors are here to help. Talking about situations before they become dangerous to someones mental health helps counselors create a game-plan to create success.
Whether it’s talking one-on-one or in a group of people who have experienced situations similar to each others, counselors will help accommodate that in any way they can.
“Just know you are not alone,” Intervention Counselor Monica Taylor says.
Taylor looks over the data of how many students need help, whether it be for anxiety and mental health counseling or helping to reset students with low grades through “Titan Tune-Ups” that prepare students to be successful, starting from what they bring to school every day. Counselors on campus want students to succeed and assist in acquiring the skills to cope and find the resources needed to start strong in the adult world.
The Student Services counselor replacing Sharon Struck, who retired last year, will arrive on campus in the first few weeks of October.
Then many more support groups will begin depending on student need for programs.
However, some groups will only pop up if there are people who advocate their needs for them to their counselors.
Counselors are a contact for other student services, like grief counseling, addiction counseling, and Mending Matters.
“It’s a form of connecting students to mental health services,” Mending Matters counselor Pamela Hechtbauer says.
It’s a safe space to talk, or not talk, whatever will help the most. Students who need the program to use the space as a quiet place if they need somewhere peaceful to think or sort out their emotions.
Titans on campus are encouraged to talk to counselors if they need help. Remember there will always be a support system waiting to help.
Whether that be counselors, teachers, or a trusted adult, know that there are people who want to lend a helping hand.
