Lu swings for CIF title
Senior Gabrielle Lu first found her passion for golf in elementary school. Little did she know, she would be on varsity throughout high school and would dominate. This year, Lu had the opportunity to lead the Varsity Girls Golf team, and she took it.
“I made her captain because she is a four year varsity starter who leads by example, is very organized, dependable and positive and gets along with everyone,” Head Coach Jim Bennet said.
Some of Lu’s responsibilities include choosing the uniform for the matches, relaying important information to the team, and giving words of encouragement.
“I think she did well at encouraging the team to play our best and not get upset over the days that we didn’t play our best,” junior Kailyn Deno said.
In addition to being an amazing teammate, she is also an extremely talented golfer. “She improved unbelievably from her freshman year to her senior year,” Bennet said. “She went from an index of 19 to an index of 5, which is tremendous. She’s our best player this year,.”
Though league has ended, Lu will be competing in CIF as an individual.
Being one of the two seniors on the team, Lu had a very special senior night. They competed in their match against Rancho Bernardo at the Maderas Golf Club on Oct. 14. Although they lost, the posters, flowers, gifts, and dinner at Best Pizza with ice cream for dessert made it all up. “It was a lot of fun,” Lu said.
Lu plans on continuing her golf career at a recreational level after high school. “I’m not going to play competitively in college, but maybe I’ll keep playing for fun. It’s also useful since I’m going into business and golf is surprisingly a big factor in it,” Lu said.
