2020 was a big year for trends; with nothing but free time, of course things like whipped coffee and bleach dyed jeans became popular. As we look forward to 2021, we can also look forward to some new trends.
Recently, astrology and spirituality have made an appearance in the media, gaining a lot of attention from young audiences. We will likely see a rise in the popularity of spirituality in the form of crystals, essential oils, tarot cards, which can be found at the RTW Unique Boutique metaphysical shop on Pomerado Road, and possibly even a trend in practices such as yoga and meditation.
In addition to this, I feel the Bohemian style associated with this spirituality will also become more popular. Patterned, flowy clothing and Boho room decor are likely to take over.
With Joe Biden as the new president of the United States, the country has shifted toward eco-friendly living and sustainability. In 2021 I expect this ideology to take over several industries, such as fashion, automotive, and cosmetics.
I believe 2021 will be the year of electric or hybrid cars, more and more people will make the switch from fossil fuels to electric charging cars like Tesla.
The cosmetic industry has been slowly starting to become more ethical, most companies steering clear of animal testing and usage of chemicals in their formulas. As skincare becomes more important, people are being more mindful of what goes on their skin, so good, eco-friendly skincare like The Ordinary, which uses sustainable packaging, and vegan makeup products like Urban Decay, Tarte, and Too Faced are likely to become more popular than formerly popular brands like Morphe which hasn’t proven to be sustainable or cruelty free.
In addition to cosmetics, sustainable clothing and ethical consumption will probably trend. The rise in thrifting clothing also caused a rise of awareness of unethically sourced clothing like fast fashion, so I predict a rise in ethically sourced clothing like Thought Clothing made more publically available.
Online thrift shops will continue to gain popularity, along with all secondhand clothing shops. I would keep an eye on websites like Etsy and Depop, where people will shop more and more for unique clothing pieces made by smaller businesses.
Creativity-wise, I expect to see surrealist art make an appearance, as well as nail art, jewelry making, and watercolor painting. Going into summer I feel we’ll see jewelry making specific to friendship bracelets and necklaces.
Regardless of what’s trending or not, 2021 will be a big year of rebuilding what’s been damaged, and hopefully returning to the normal lifestyle that we left behind when COVID came.
