Poway High seniors get closer and closer every day to college due dates, the weeks ahead filled with finishing applications for not only college, but for financial aid.
Applications for California state universities like, SDSU and San Marcos and UC schools like UCLA and UCSD are due on November 30th. For these applications you don’t need your official transcript initially or letters of rec.
Out of state schools very in due dates, so check the schools website frequently to stay updated on deadlines. Many schools require the Common Application, informally known as the Common App, an college admission application that applicants may use to apply to any of more than 700 member colleges and universities in 49 states and the District of Columbia, as well as in Canada, China, and many European countries. To see if your desired college needs the common app check the application area on the website.
After applying, to either an in-state or out of state schools, you will receive an email about how to set up a portal where colleges will keep you updated. Make sure to sign up for these reminders immediately. For the junior class of 2020, to prepare for the upcoming college stress, you can attend the Juniors, Planning Night on Feb.28 at 6pm in K-1.
As for financial aid, FAFSA is program that determines eligibility for grants to students based of their parents’ tax information from the previous year. The FAFSA opened Oct.1st and is available until midnight on June 30th, but the earlier you apply the more money you are likely to receive, for the money available does run out.
Besides FAFSA, Lynn Oaks keeps a list of scholarships available in the counseling office. Make sure to check in with her often for the list is always being updated with new opportunities for scholarships.
