Celebrating the holiday season in Poway

HANNAH WILLIAMS/ Pop-culture Editor–

Christmas is here, and what better way to spend the holidays than finding festive entertainment around the city. Whether you would like to gaze at bright lights, enjoy a play or two based on Christmas stories, or even go take a picture with the jolly man himself, now is the time to celebrate.

Here in Poway, many residents have dominated the Christmas decoration element. On Hickory Court/Hickory Street, Butterwood Court and Rockrose Court off of Twin Peaks road. and Silverset Street, locals cover their houses with stunning lights to create Candy Cane Courts. This year they are open from Dec. 10 to Jan. 2 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
If light sighting isn’t your favorite, then drive to the mountain town of Julian for a hot apple cider and a delicious piece of homemade apple pie. On Saturdays, you can stroll through the neighborhood streets and enjoy the sounds of wandering Christmas carolers and savor the sweater weather.
Down towards the coast, The Winter Wonderland at Del Mar Village celebrates the holidays with carolers strolling down the streets, a snow hill for children, meeting Santa Claus, a cake walk, seasonal treats to savor and holiday shopping at Del Mar Plaza.
If you take an interest in plays, then Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a great theatrical piece to see. It’s playing at The Old Globe from Nov. 5 to Dec. 26, and tickets start at $24.
There are many ways to spend the holidays, but the most important reason is that you spend it with the ones you love.

Energy Drink: Red Bull Vs. Monster

ADAM VOGGENTHALER/Staff Writer

Monster and Red Bull are two of the most popular drinks out there.

There are many minor differences between the two that make people prefer one over the other.  For one Monster’s can size is sixteen ounces and Red Bull is served in a twelve ounce can.  Monster energy has a whopping  54 grams of sugar compared to Red Bull only has 37 grams. thus giving Monster a sweeter taste.  The caffeine level in both drinks is extremely high.

Monster tops it off with a massive 89 milligrams of caffeine and Red Bull has 111miligrams. In comparison, an average cup of coffee has 95 milligrams.

There is also a minor price difference that sets apart the two products.  Monster energy drink sells for around three dollars while Red Bull can sell for almost five dollars per can.

Many Titans prefer Red Bull over Monster because Red Bull is faster to drink.  “In my opinion I like Red Bull better because its faster to drink due to the size of the bottle and it makes me feel alive” senior Ryan Carlson Said.  Carlson is not the only titan that prefers red bull.  Many Titans also think Red Bull tastes better “Red Bull simply tastes better than monster” Junior Teryn Correa states .

Many Titans have conflicting views on these two drinks but they both give the person drinking it tons of energy.

Freshmen Tyler Book likes Monster better because “ better” than Red Bull.  Personally, I do not really prefer one over the other.  If I had to choose one drink over the other I would have to go with Monster because I like the taste better.  Topic will always be a hot one.

Fun suggestions for Summer 2014

JACK CHINTALA. Staff Writer.

This summer, many teens will be enjoying their time off by going to the beach and hanging out with friends.  Summer is a time that is meant to be enjoyed, but there are some activities students can do to give them an edge when school starts in the fall.

One of the most helpful things a student can do over summer, if they are of legal age, is to get a job.  Getting a job gives students independence and a consistent source of income.  It can also give the student job experience he or she may need when they enter the work force.

Another helpful activity a student can do is to take online classes over summer.  While usually not as fulfilling as classes held at Poway High, these classes can help a student regain credits they may have missed the prior year, or give a student extra credits so they can take certain classes they may want to take.  These online classes may also help a student review a subject that may not be their strongest.

Another activity a student can do over summer to give them an edge is to prepare for the ACT and SAT.  This may not seem like the most fun activity, but there are also no due dates for studying over summer.  Students can study on their own schedule and not have to worry about as many other commitments.  Studying over the summer may also help boost the student’s chances at getting into the college of their choice.

One more activity a student can do is practice their sport.  Without school in the way, students will be able to better refine their skills over summer.

There is no school in summer for a reason, but that does not mean school should be completely forgotten.
